rank, and given extra duty for their failure to obey an order or regulation. The outcome of the court-martial is determined by the severity of the dereliction or willful disobedience. A minor infraction may lead to a lesser, non-judicial punishment rather than being dishonorably discharged, being confined or forfeiture of all pay and allowances. If the infraction is severe, then the military personnel may be confined to prison for up to a year and dishonorably discharged Although in rare circumstances, a military personnel may be sanctioned up to and including the death penalty. As stated earlier, this punishment is rare and can only been used in times of war and if the military personnel is found in sever dereliction of duty. There are currently no known instances of the death penalty being used as punishment for dereliction of duty within the United States Military.

Leadership in the military is very important to keep order and the status quo. Leaders can be found in all facets of the military. Whether the leader is the President of the United States of America or a private, leaders are a valuable asset to and within the military. The United States Army values its leaders and promotes them to foster an environment of leadership and potential. Being a leader does not require having four stars on the uniform. It just takes being aware of your surroundings, having knowledge within the subject or job and being able to make sound decisions that can positively affect the environment.

As stated earlier, the United States Army fosters an environment of potential and leadership. Lower ranking personnel can be promoted for being able to be effectively being able to communicate and lead people. A private can be promoted for being able to complete all tasking and be able to show that they can lead within any tasking. Their potential will always be on display when they are performing well and being aware of their surroundings. If the private does get promoted, then they are made aware of their capabilities and are able to lead in some function. Becoming a senior enlisted personnel means you have the knowledge of being a capable leader, being able to make decisions that contribute to all sections or squads, being capable to lead junior enlisted personnel and foster an environment that promotes growth in self and knowledge.

There are varying levels of leadership within an organization. At the top is the most senior member of the organization. They make decisions that will affect the organization as a whole. In the military, that is the General or the highest ranking officer within that command. Below the most senior leader are junior leaders that have the knowledge to run the organization within their prospective circles.

Within a company, there are vice presidents that run different sections of that company. For example, a company may have a vice president of operations, vice president of finance, and vice president of personnel. These people are very knowledgeable about their prospective sections within the company. The vice president of finance is capable of being to make decisions that keeps the company in business by cutting cost in overall spending or cost reductions. The vice president of operations knows how to keep the company running efficiently by the most effective methods of power, communication, technology, etc. The vice president of personnel makes sure that the company is well staffed and is keeping the best employees and training the next group of great employees. This vice president is also responsible for approving all events that help with staff morale and well-being.

Under the vice presidents are the supervisors who keep the company running within their prospective areas. In the military, there are noncommissioned officers who are supervisors for all junior enlisted. All noncommissioned officers having the knowledge to be able to run the organization appropriately and are knowledgeable of the functions of their duties and all others under them. They are able to instruct all junior enlisted, and if needed, instruct senior officials of the day-to-day operations of their section. The noncommissioned officer is capable to being able to lead several people, including civilians and junior enlisted, to keep their section functioning and capable of meeting or exceeding the mission specifications.

Under the supervisors are the shift leaders or group leaders. They are the most knowledgeable of the individuals working within a section. In the United States Army, you will find Specialists who are capable of running the day-to-day operation of the section. These soldiers are the most qualified and trained to be able to run their section efficiently. These soldiers are normally the middle man for the individuals who are under them and the noncommissioned officers. They are effective communicators who can task out individuals to complete all daily tasks and assignments. These soldiers are also capable of becoming a noncommissioned officer because they are learning how to become a noncommissioned officer from senior enlisted and how to become an effective leader for their section.

Although individuals on the bottom the this structure, that does not mean they are not leaders. A single person can be a leader and take charge of daily assignments or they can lead other individuals and bring the day-to-day operation to a smooth completion. Normally, everyone has a chance to become a leader. All people are capable of leading others.

What is leadership? Leadership is defined as “the power or ability to lead other people”. Leadership takes many different forms, such as authoritarian, democratic, laissez-faire, task-oriented or relationship-based leadership. Each of these styles are used based on the situation that arises.

Authoritarian leadership is leading with all decision-making powers centered in the leader. These leaders do not entertain ideas from people underneath them. Generally, these leaders are people like dictators. Democratic leadership is when all people within a group can make decisions. When there is a problem that arises that needs multiple inputs or ideas, this style is best used. Laissez-faire leadership is when a leader is a leader in name and passes all decision-making to anyone else. If a leader is nominated and they do not want to make decision, then the people who elected that leader are given the power to make all decisions to finish all work and complete all goals. Task-oriented leadership is when a leader is focused on completing the tasks by making decisions to effective accomplish the goal. Relationship-based leadership is when a leader focuses on the relationships within the group and is more concerned with the well-being and happiness of group members.
