The rations given to soldiers in Afghanistan were small compact meals that have Sous Vide this is a method of cooking proteins and vegetables to make them last longer as some missions may go for weeks or months on end. They were designed to stay fresh. Also very cheap therefore the A.I.F (Australian Imperial Force) could over ration rather then under ration causing starvation as the bare minimum. All food that is taken over to the middle east was specifically made for diets, as the soldiers needed to keep fit and it help with the acclimatization of their bodies. Therefore, all food rations were taken into proportion when selecting the best ratio and portion sizes for the soldiers.
What were the training differences towards a modern soldier to a world war one soldier?
The training that the soldiers in world war one endured were easy tasks. Many of the service men in world war one were actually volunteers. A.I.F deployed to Egypt for around 4 months. The training was not serious, due to many of the young men believing that they were going on an Adventure of a Lifetime some of the recruitment posters highlighted. Many soldiers were bludging during training when some of the more experienced soldiers knew what they were up against.
The training for modern soldiers were the deployment to Darwin/ NT due to similar terrain to Afghanistan. Trained in NT from May to October. They trained with weapons, tactics, operation procedures and learning Arabic when talking to civilians. They were then deployed to Kuwait for further 8 month training. Therefore, the Australians fighting in Afghanistan were much more successful during battle, due to the training methods they underwent.
Conclusion: Therefore the Afghanistan campaign was much more successful as the Australians knew what they were going up against and not so much about how they are getting there. I sincerely hope you all have taken a piece of information away from today’s information on the difference from a world war one soldier to a modern day soldier.
