Executive Order 9066 would not be formally rescinded until President Ford did so on February 19, 1976. This did not however do away with the authority of the United States government to intern people during a time of war. As of today you can still get a job in the military as an Internment/Relocation Specialist which during peace time is used to help those displaced for any reason such as a natural disaster. This is something to think about as we see all of these refugees fleeing war torn countries wanting to come to America. Would you want to be disqualified or even worse imprisoned, sorry, interned simply because you have Irish, German, or even English ancestry? This is one situation where Americans can really learn one of history’s most popular lessons from, and that is the saying that “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
In the more open and modern society that we live in today, one would hope that these type of things would be nothing more than a distant and unbelievable memory. The truth is that there are still those who choose to be ruled by fear and paranoia. These people are ignorant of facts and logic and let bigotry and hate rule their thinking. We must continue to educate and assist those who would allow these types of things happen again. It is only in true knowledge that we will overcome our differences, both those which are great and those which are petty.
