As for homeland security and emergency management regarding terrorist attacks, several things can be learned from the bombing of the USS Cole. As Captain Lippold stated, we must take these attacks seriously. It should not have to take a massive and destructive attack like 9/11 for a country to understand they are at war. We must take into consideration every threat and attack regardless of how little it may seem. When leaders in our military express their concern for our safety as a country they must be taken seriously. They are the men and women who experience these things first hand and we must trust them and their instincts. As for the emergency management aspect, we must be able to quickly respond to situations on foreign soil. These men and women are selflessly sacrificing their lives for us and we cannot even provide justice to the families that lost their loved ones because we simply do not have all of the answers to their questions. We must not only be able to move forward from such a tragic situation but we must also improve our ability to make peace with the situations and give peace to the families who are losing so much.

On the whole, the USS Cole is not forgotten. The men and women who died that day are still deeply remembered and are still in the hearts of their surviving crew mates. This simple attack caused a tremendous amount of damage both mentally and physically to the United States. Although this attack should have been a red flag about the al Qaeda terrorist group, it’s unfortunate it took an attack like 9/11 for the government to make changes in homeland security.
