Critical Analyze

In Chapter 3, the paragraph “The Fishery” Margaret R. Conrad and James K. Hiller provided the logical reason about how fishery was started in Atlantic region, and focus on the fishery of the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia while they paint a positive picture of the early European exploitation of the coast of North America, they do not look at the negative consequences of their trade. They are also not focus on the negative consequences on the agriculture and the forest. While they note the benefit to French consumers, Margaret R. Conrad and James K. Hiller ignore the possible consequences of the loss of fish to the Aboriginal population along the coast. They need to talked about more negative consequences that the European explorer that brings to Aboriginal population.

In “Aboriginal –European Trade” they talked about the reason why Aboriginal and European stared to trade. It was follow by a logical order. They write about the reason why fur trade is so popular in Euro and also the process of how they barter with each side. They described the feeling of European explores but never mentioned about the feeling of Aboriginal people they just wrote that “Aboriginal Peoples were usually eager to barter with the new comers, and casual trading was commonplace well before 1530s”and the do not write the reason why Aboriginal people was eager to trade with Europe. If they can write more details of the reason of trade for both side, it will be clearer for readers to understand the desire for Aboriginal populations.

In the text when they talked about Industrial Revolution period, they did a great job to point out the most important factor is the development of railway. However, at the first sentence of the paragraph “An Industrial Revolution in the Maritimes” they said, “Coal, abundant in Cape Breton, northeastern Nova Scotia, and southern New Brunswick, was the key component in the efforts of Maritimers to join the Industrial Revolution” it might trick readers and let them think about are authors of this book really consider Newfoundland as an important part of Atlantic region? People might be confused by the information that the authors provided. Even though they talked about “Newfoundland’s National Policy” in the next paragraph, it is still tricking people with the timeline of different event. It is better to put Newfoundland in the “An Industrial Revolution in the Maritimes” in order to make people consider the region as a whole.

In the wartime they talked about the both positive and negative consequences that the war bring the economy, and they also focus on describing society of the wartime, it will help people to understand the atmosphere during wartime. However, they can focus more on the gap between the rich and the poor provinces; it can compares those different resources that each provinces and provided reader why the provinces is different compare with each other.

In Chapter 15, they focus on how the economy of the Atlantic region goes after the Second World War; they followed the logical order telling readers that how the free trade was decided and how it works for the region’s economy. In this part of the book, they just telling readers that they are losing young labors within the region but they did not write any consequences that the new policy brings for the people, they focus too much on the economy in this part. If they can write more about how people life changes after the economy was rebuild and reader will know more about the economy changed at this period.

Conclusion

To sum, the book Atlantic Canada written by Margaret Conrad and James K. Hiller are focus on the making of Atlantic region and the theme of economy changes overtime is through the whole book. In assessing their work, they present their argument with a balanced use of appeals and I highly recommend that people should read through the whole book in order to know how Atlantic region was formed and developed .
