Discussion and overall conclusion
In 1996, the author made the survey about civil engineering students in UK. To made the data reliable, first of all, author used former data to make a comparison.; secondly, the data used matched pair sampling techniques and the most important was that the author surveyed male and female severally, which may make the data more reliable. As a whole, although the factors in different gender had different ideas, the solution found that males and females enjoyed similar employment rate. After drawing the conclusion, researchers found it had some difference from former, despite the fact that it was hard to say the former were inaccurate.
I thought there contained some other factors influencing the accuracy about the data. For example, civil engineering students who were the final term of the students were of different ages; therefore, their career choice decisions were normally varied from each other. So, it might cause the suspense of the result concluded. Moreover, the quantity of the population they have surveyed was too small to reflect the true influencing factors.
The value of the study
The values of this research should not be overlooked. Firstly, the result was of benefit to employers, because they need to know how different important factors influenced males and females in career choice of civil engineering so as to improve their employment strategies. For example, when they realized that female need child care, they would contribute to cater for this need of female employees. Secondly, the survey aimed at researching civil engineering separately, Which was more accurate and convincing than before. Last but not least, the author’s critical spirit and cautious attitude were worth us studying.
