The majority of free Blacks support the Union; hoping to gain greater rights for themselves. However, some free blacks publicly support the Confederacy. Blacks fought for the Union and the Confederacy. This was not true at the beginning of the war as neither side allowed the black man to have a firearm. However, as the war wages and both lose lives daily, the black man – slave and free are enlisted. Initially used for menial labor and not for combat, blacks join the Union Army with issuing of The Emancipation Proclamation Act (2015). Just because they were free did not mean black soldiers were free of segregation and harsh treatment including reduced pay and food rations. One all-black regiment - men of the 54th Massachusetts fought back by serving without pay, rather than taking the reduced wages. The 54th Massachusetts regiment, sensationalized in the movie, ‘Glory’, lead the Union in the assault on Fort Wagner (2015).
