People are the main opponents of saving or donating food. Just a 15 percent reduction in losses in the U.S. food supply would save enough to feed 25 million Americans annually. It also would lighten the burden on landfills, where food waste makes up the largest component of solid waste, according to the NRDC, a nonprofit environmental organization. People do not take awareness of the consequences that causes throwing food, not only affect the environment, it also affect millions of starving children in poor countries that desire some food. Many restaurants refuse to donate food to different organizations. One of the reasons why is because stores often don’t have the space to store leftover food while they are waiting for agencies to pick it up. And food banks may not have the capacity to transport or properly store the food if it's highly perishable. Even worse, many stores don’t even know they should be donating their leftover food or where to donate it. Another reason that stores are opposed to donate, is to not being involved in legal problems since they think that leftovers do not reach the quality standards and can get many people sick. But, what they don’t know is that around the country there is many solutions like banks of food, as the non-profit organization “Feeding America” which collects donations for food insecure people that are in need. If people were better informed, the quantities of food waste will disappear, and we’ll not live in a world surrounded by problems.
In conclusion, humans are the number one reason of food loss. Although, there are so many things we can do to help stop food waste. We can plan our meals, start backyard composting, encourage our cities to start curbside recycling pickups for food scraps, help the different Organizations or food banks, and be more conscious and aware about what we get, and what we throw away. Therefore, thinking, eating, and saving will make the difference. People all across America can help stop world hunger, and stop damaging our environment released from the food waste. Throwing it away isn’t the answer. The change is in our hands.
