On February 2, 1959 it’s considered to be the day the music died. On the Winter Dance Party Tour they played in the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The next day they were supposed to perform in Moorhead, Minnesota. The tour bus was having trouble Holly had a chartered a plane. According to some reports, Valens won a seat on the plane in a coin toss with Holly’s Guitarist Tommy Allsup. J.P. “The Big Bopper”. Not only did Valens switch places but Richardson also traded places with another original passenger, Waylon Jennings. This was all happening when a light snowstorm was going on. The plane had only traveled about five miles before crashing into a cornfield. All the passengers were killed. Ritchie Valens was only 17 years old when he died. Valens only left a few recordings his first self-titled album was released shortly after the accident and his album did well on the charts. Later in 2001 Valens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
What I learned from researching Ritchie Valens was that sometimes we have it all and it disappears in a blink of an eye. Ritchie didn’t have the greatest childhood but he didn’t have the worst childhood either. His family encouraged him to do what he was passionate about. He was just 17 years old when he died. I also learned that just because he had conflicts with his parents’ marriage and divorce it didn’t stop him from becoming a singer and songwriter. Ritchie went from being an average boy to becoming into the first Chicano Rock and Roll star.
