his squad’s as well. As previously stated Shukhov is very motivated in his work and always tries to be as productive as possible. However, Shukhov notes that the amount of work a squad finishes corresponds to the amount of food the squad receives. In the story Shukhov states, “A cleverly fixed work report meant good rations for five days” (82). As you can see, when the squad members do a good job it earns them five days of good rations. However, as the result of Shukhov constantly trying to work hard and going the extra mile with his work, it gives the squad a better chance to earn extra food. Shukhov puts a lot of pride and effort into his work and it benefits both him and his squad. All in all, Shukhov work ethic increases his ability to survive because it allows him to earn extra food.

After many years of exhibiting dignity and personal pride with his work ethic and behavior, Shukhov had gained the respect of his fellow inmates. Shukhov’s attitude and work mentality is admired and respected in his squad. During meal time, Shukhov demonstrates his dignity and gets food out of it. The text states, “‘Ivan Denisovich take one for yourself and give another to Tsezar’” (77). Pavlo decided to give Shukhov an extra bowl instead of Fetiukov when both of them were already finished with their food. Unlike Fetiukov, who was obviously showing his desire for extras, Shukhov was not lowering himself down to begging. This extra bowl of kasha helps lend strength to Shukhov because the portion of food served in the gulag is not enough for anybody. Therefore, increasing his ability to survive in the gulag.

In conclusion, Shukhov’s personal pride, dignity and work ethic increase his ability to survive in the Gulag system. Shukhov is very prideful in himself and would never lower himself to such low moral standards like a man such as Fetiukov. Shukhov’s presence also helps others because of his willingness to work hard. His ability to work hard increases the amount of food the squad gets. Furthermore, being respected for having dignity is still relevant to this day. Just like in the gulag, if someone today would act undignified and rude they would be disrespected. All in all, Shukhov’s traits are essential to his survival in the Gulag system.
