Rachel needs to ask the right questions to get the right information without wasting time. However, if she improves in the places where she is not effective, Rachel, as a project manager is a good project manager.
- What does the case tell you about what it is like to be a project manager?
Answer: After reading the case, I feel like project manager is a responsible person whose major ingredients for the success are better communication, interpersonal, decision making and leadership skills. Project manager has to direct the team members to reach out to the solution. In the process of solving the problem, s/he has to take the collaborative effort from her/his teammates too. This will boost their motivation and participation. Also project manager has to keep on meeting with her team members for the discussions and coordination.
Project manager is and must be an effective organization planner. Project manager must be good in communication, interpersonal, decision making and leadership skills. As a leader, project manager must be able to provide convincing responses to the ideas and suggestions. This will enable them to gain the support from the stakeholders. Project manager should have good and friendly relationship with individuals if and off the office. As in the case, Rachel asked John to investigate the problems immediately is the result of her good interpersonal skill. At the same time, they should be able to take an effective quick decision. Like in the case, Rachel walked down to the marketing manager office for the clarification as soon as possible as the problem arises. Also taking the decision to get the equipment for the project through express delivery system earlier than it is planned is another effective decision for the success of project. Above all, project manager must have good communication skills. The project manager should update her/his boss about the progress. There should be a coordination between the project manager and the superior.
Thus, being the project manager is a very responsible job. S/he has to lead courageously, influence others and act with resilience. Her/his concern must be on the project and had to focus on achieving the goals of the project.
