valiant, I honour him: but, as he was ambitious, I slew him.” This is effective because it makes Brutus and the other conspirators actions seem less harsh and convinces the romans that the potential problem isn’t a real problem anymore. In the fourth paragraph of his speech Brutus states “Who here is so vile that will not love his country?” which is a rhetorical question, another persuasive technique. This is persuasive because it makes a powerful statement that makes the audience introspect on their own ideals and has the audience give more trust to the speaker. When Brutus said “If any, speak; for him have I offended. I pause for a reply. None, Brutus, none. Then none have I offended”(p.4-6) he was applying the testimonial persuasive technique which is effective because the message to the audience is straightforward and easy to understand.

Brutus’ funeral speech can clearly be seen as being of higher quality and of a higher caliber than Antony’s. Brutus wields ethos, logos, pathos as well as the persuasive techniques to a more expert degree than Antony. While Antony’s speech does include some use of persuasive techniques such as, Name Calling and Loaded Words, they do little to support his position and focus on attacking Brutus’ character as opposed to addressing any valid points he may have made. Brutus surpasses Antony’s ability to use Ethos, Logos, and Pathos as well. Antony’s only real example of pathos is used with anger which makes him appear unprofessional and less confident and his use of logos is unspecific and lacks key information. All things considered Brutus trumps Antony in every area of persuasion in their speeches.
