Outcome: I can see that everyone is satisfied with what we came up wit, ideas and designs, and we all are ready and excited to make this project. After we decided the how the design is going to be, we divided the materials that everyone should bring with in the next meeting. We also had a room booked with the help of one of our teammates. Applying the method of ‘Elevator Pitch’ helped us to gather what everyone desires and what we will do will satisfy all the team members.

Implications: When I took the ‘Elevator Pitch’ method in the seminar, by the example presented by the TA, I thought that it is hard to apply. Gathering all the important and need information in few minuets, and only focus on what the topic needs, I thought it is going to be hard without practicing it. After practicing this method in the seminar and with the group, I found how well and effective this method to be applied in small projects or specially in big projects.

Self-Assessment #3

Competency: Building Effective Teams and Teamwork

Developmental Need: After our professor divided us into teams, and we get to know each other. We started to have meetings to plan for our video project. We start of with making our Gantt Chart. As a team we all wanted to get our desired goals, be effective and provide high quality work, and try to come up with creative ideas. After we start working on the project, we found out that there are some tasks that is going well, however, some are going poorly. For example, communication and interacting with my group was going very well, however, time managing and planning to meet was a bit difficult to arrange it with everyone.

Course material: I decided to use some of the skills we learned in this course for managing high-performing teams, which are task-facilitating roles and relationship-building rules.

Application: As a group in order to satisfy everyone and make it works for all team members, we decided to make the 20-30 minutes after each seminar to be for planning and discussing ideas and sharing knowledge. Then for working in the project and recording it, we decided to book a room in campus for 3 hours, when everyone is done classes from 7 pm to 10pm, and planned to finish it in this 3 hours. We have few hours and we are not grantee to have our Rube Gold Machine worked from the first attempt, so tried to use time wisely. I started with giving some directions, which helped us to approach in our task. Then, each one of us was assigned to be accountable for a part different than the other. Also, all of us were reminding each other about timing and encouraging each other. I was satisfied with my team, everyone in the team was supportive, helping and assisting each other. All of us were basically productive in this short amount of time.

Outcome: Personally, I was surprised with the productive work we did in few hours. The room was booked for 3 hours, however, we finished our Rube Goldberg Machine in 2 hours and 30 minutes, which was not expected. We thought that we will need more time to have it done, which in consequent will have to build our design again because it is hard to carry it around. Also, dividing work, where I work on the first loop part, Jayne and Colin work in the second part, Eric works in the popsicle stick part, and Joey weaves the net. In fact, having an effective team help us to have our project successfully done on time.

Implications: I have clearly seen how teams and team work would not be effective if it were not any supportive from both sides. The roles of relationship-building and task-facilitating help teams in achieving the goals desired and satisfy all team members. In my opinion this would not be successful, if we were not supporting and encouraging each other. Also, I can add that organizing and assigning parts for each one according to their abilities that rise the feeling of responsible toward the project we are doing.
