Management Theories

Management styles weave into management theories. For instance, the contingency theory has managers make decisions on a case by case basis as a certain situation arises. This approach could work well with the participative leadership style by allowing employees to have an impression that working toward a goal matters in a case by case basis, creating unity amongst staff members and management. The Contingency Theory supports the idea of making decisions based on what is happening in the exact moment. The concept would prioritize what is the most appropriate action to accomplish based on the current situation. The Chaos Theory is based on constant change and evolving decisions based on the changes, which reflects Contingency Theory in the fact that it changes to fit circumstances. The Systems Theory and the Theory X and Theory Y are constructed around the workers. In the Systems Theory, a manager will observe patterns and institute plans which as a group can achieve the mission of the organization instead of just one department. The X and Y Theory rationalizes there are two types of workers that make up the workforce that managers recognize; those who [naturally lack ambition and need incentives to increase productivity lean toward the Theory X management style. Theory Y believes that workers are naturally driven and take responsibility. While managers who believe in Theory X values often use an authoritarian style of leadership, Theory Y leaders encourage participation from workers] (Houston Chronicle, 2014, n.p.). These theories need to be flexible and appropriate for the situation and support the organizations mission and vision.

My Organization – Organizational and Management Theories and Styles

The Organizational Theory that best describes my organization is the Contingency Theory. The organization is flexible to the nature of the environment, especially the financial state. There is a considerable amount of flexibility within the organization with swift modifications and adjustments. The management style which resembles my organization is autocratic which marries the chaos management theories effectively. For instance, the staff is always under a microscope and has little autonomy but when something occurs such as a near miss sentinel event, the chaos theory is implemented quickly.

Changes

Participative Management would raise employee morale and allow employees to believe and understand the goal of the decisions. Also, instead of using one theory, I would employ The Systems Theory in conjunction with the Contingency Theory to better improve communication throughout the organization.

Summary

Organizational and management theories require flexibility to meet the needs of an organization. The management styles and theories should be aligned with mission, values, and ethics of the organization one is employed. There are many theories about management, however, matching one theory can be difficult in the ever changing environment of health care. Flexibility is a fundamental and essential quality for organizations, managers, and employees.
