Good leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience (Jago, 1982). This is a quote which introduces a definition of trait and process leadership and it embraces the challenge grappled by people with a need to define the same.

Leadership trait is a theory developed by Thomas Carlyle’s (1849) stating that the specific individual characteristic and attributes that differentiates between leaders and person who are not leaders. Its proponents insist that a leader is inborn and cannot be learned, that leadership requires unique personality trait to specific individuals. This theory attempts to answer the question; Are leaders born or made? Hoffman (2011) notes that dominance , honesty, charisma and creativity are some of the dominant traits in a person disposed to be a leader.

Process leadership is where a leader applies knowledge and skills in the process of controlling and managing. Process leadership can be learnt over a period of time unlike leadership trait which is considered to be inborn.

Irrespective of one’s ideology on leadership and management, only one truth remains that they are interlinked. Managers who are efficient and effective must possess leadership traits which propel the organization and the managers to excellence.
