Demand Side Management’s competitive advantage can give the customers real cost savings on their electricity bill, whereas overall energy decrease can be hard to attain, a considerable decrease over a short period of time during a price spike can be a much simpler goal to achieve. DSM allows the customer to target price spikes by preparing power concentrated processes outside of these times. This not only saves the customer money but also helps the electrical grid to function more economically. DSM has identified the recipient of the process which is the customers because it aims the customers a lot more than any other thing (Li & Shchukin, 2012).

DSM has a purpose of solving the problem of energy wastage, cost saving through energy saving and conserving the environment it does all this by ensuring that customers are motivated and educated on the importance of saving energy and conserving the environment by using fuels and products that are environmental friendly . DSM gets its information from the customers through monitoring how they use electricity or energy and how they conserve the environment this is a better way of gathering information because it is primary information direct from the source this makes DSM to be more competitive.
