In this phase, related to the situation, the system developer need to analyze what is need to be done and to structure a new developed system in order to enhance the previous system and to avoid the same problem from occurring. All the feasibility study must be counted in order to build a well develop system.

Design

After done with the first two steps planning and analysis, which in those both previous steps the problems have been identified and the problems solving have been listed on, now moving on to the design phase which in this phase the person whom in charged with the development of the system such as the system developer need to design a system which meets with the requirement and needs. In addition, the development also must be added in order to improve the current system to be better. The action involved in this phase is the system developer need to convert the recommended solution to system specifications. The design can either be logical design or in physical design.

The system developer need to design a new develop system that meets with the requirements of the users from the Dell Company and to improve the system so that the system is more understandable and easy for the user to use it.

Implementation

After the recommended solutions have been converted to system specifications, the implementation phase must be done which in this phase, the real system is build up. Thus, in this phase, the actions that involved is, the real code is written and some test occurs to see whether there are errors at the code or not and the test also is made in order to ensure that the system is compatible with the available hardware. In this phase too, the system that has been built up is ready to be use by the user and some training need to be assist in order to determine that the users of the system to able to use the system well. The implementation of the system may take time which it is actually depends on the system itself. If the system is complex, it may take a bit time.

In this phase, the system that has been designed by the system developer of the Dell Company need to be build where the real system is developed. In this phrase, the system developer need to test whether the system is compatible with the hardware that the Dell’s Company has provided or vice versa and in addition, some test and practices need to be done to the user so that will make the user more understand towards the system and how to use the system.

Maintenance

The fifth phase which is the last phase is the maintenance where in this phase, after the system have been developed and is use by the users, the system needs maintenance where in the maintenance the process where the system is been service and some updating is done in this phase. The actions that involved in the maintenance phase is where the information system is systematically repair and some improvements may be added such as to upgrade it in terms of security and safety of the system.

The last phase which the maintenance phase occurs after the system is well developed in the Dell Company. In this phase, the maintenance is need in order to update the system which meets with the new advancement. Thus, some update also needed in order to secure and for the safety of the information that is keep in the system such as the private information of the Dell’s Company customers.

Those are the five main stages that involved in the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Thus, from the SDLC there are numbers of SDLC models that are created in order to manage the development of the system which some of them are Rapid Application Development (RAD), Spiral, Waterfall and Prototyping. The suitability to use the models in developing a system depends on its complexness. Thus, in order to determine which life cycle models that is compatible with the current situation, a comparison and evaluation must be made. From the numbers of life cycle models, there are 3 types of life cycle models taken out to be compared and to be evaluate which is waterfall, Spiral and Rapid Application Development (RAD).

Waterfall model

Figure 3: Waterfall model

Figure 3 above shows the stages involved during the development of the waterfall model. Referred from the (Mohtashim, 2006), waterfall model is the first model that has been introduced in the SDLC model. There are 6 stages involved in the waterfall model which is the first stage is requirement analysis, the second stage is design, the third stage is implementation, the fourth stage is testing, the next stage is deployment or can be called as installation stage and moving on to the last stage is the maintenance stage.

In the requirement stage, the system developer need to defines the required information for the proposed information system, identify the function behavior and the performances of the expected information system and search for the required and suitable interfaces for the information system. moving on to the second stage which is design. At this design stage, the system developer starts to design the proposed information system which all the requirements of the system have been discussed and to ensure that the system is compatible with the available hardware or not.

The third stage is the implementation stage where the development of the system occurs and with the designation of the information system, the system is developed into the small units. Thus, moving on to the fourth stage which is the testing phrase, the development of the small units of the information system is being test and combined into a whole system where after the combination, the whole system will be test for any errors or misfailure.

In the deployment stage or installation stage, after the system is successfully developed, the system can be installed for the organization in the usage of the end user and lastly moving on to the last stage which is maintenance. Maintenance occurs when there are some problems that need to be fix or the system need to be update to be better or to ensure the safety and the security of the system.

Waterfall model is easy to use and it is understandable and it is good for management control which the model is used for the development of the system that involves with planning work, staff and stuffs that related with managements. The user involvement is very limited which the involvement only occurs during the requirement phase and this type of model needed one phase to be completed first before moving on to the next phases and due to
