- Both marketing and sales are making their own projections. Not only does this waste resources, it also causes confusion within the other departments especially if the projections from the two departments contradict each other. Which do you follow? What is R&D follows one but manufacturing starts working towards the other?

- Both product development and Marketing suggest new products. As long as product development continues to suggest new products, more often than not, they will chose to develop the product they suggested over one that was suggested by marketing.

- Product development does not know if they should talk to sales or marketing and the two departments do not know either. So the product development team usually goes straight to the manufacturing team. But this leaves both teams in the dark on plans that could affect one or both teams.

The next step is to develop and document standardization between the groups. This includes creating standard forms and document templates. It also includes standardizing definitions and acronyms. Without standardization, there is a good possibility of miscommunication between the departments or locations.

- Are we using standard or metric units? Celsius or Fahrenheit?

- What is the difference between GB and Gb? The

- The difference between raw disk space and useable diskspace?

Proposed Communication Framework

As a global and geographically dispersed company, the communications framework will need to consist of multiple avenues of communications:

- Face to face communications: This is not always possible due to time constraints and cost of travel. But when possible, management should travel to each location to make the employees feel like they are engaged and part of the larger company, not isolated.

- Phone, Instant messaging (IM): and Video Tele Conferencing (VTC): The ability to do VTCs help keep everyone connected and will help cut down on the cost of travel.

- E-mail: Email is a good form of communication when a response is not needed right away or when phone, IM and VTC is not always feasible such as when communicating with the manufacturing plant in Shanghai where one of the two locations would have to be at the office in the middle of the night.

- Collaborative work environment: This is a web based product such as OpenText, Documentum or SharePoint. These types of products get the company a central repository for all of its documents, forms, templates, etc. They also give the ability to create work spaces to allow collaboration within each department and also between departments.
