are of a specific lesson than to have an explicit guide?

“So basically what we’re saying here is, it helps if kids know you’re basing your judgment. A rubric gives them that information. It says this is the scoring system. This is how I’m making the judgment about your work” (Laureate Education 1996l). The criteria I chose for my assessment in my rubric were three major areas – applied knowledge, explanation, and procedures. I chose applied knowledge because I felt as if it was vital to attaining the objective if the student could show that he or she was able use the concepts that was presented, specifically the procedures for multiplying and dividing fractions. I chose explanation because I feel as if students are not able to properly explain how they solved a problem, then they do not truly have a grasp on the topic. Finally, I chose procedures because I felt it was vital for the students to be able to follow the procedures that are required to multiply and divide fractions.

I believe that this rubric will help facilitate self-monitoring with my students by ensuring that they are able to explain how it is that they solved a particular algorithm. If I walk around and inquire as to how they solved a given problem, it would be my expectation that they would be able to explain it to me based upon what has been introduced in class, or how they came upon it using a strategy of their own. Also, it would facilitate self-management, as students would need to continually check the procedural steps and methods of multiplying and dividing fractions in order to attain a correct answer.

It would be my hope that my students, with the use of the rubric, would pay more attention to detail in this particular lesson and turn in quality work. “The quality of work can be increased through more self-directed learning” (Laureate 1996o). Through the use of rubrics, it will be my goal to elevate my students to turn in a higher quality of work, not just for this lesson, but across the curriculum.
