Application of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is being used in various sectors to make work easier. Artificial intelligence is meant to compliment human workers not to replace them. Some of the sectors where artificial intelligence is being applied are described next;

Healthcare

Artificial intelligence has been applied in various areas in healthcare which has improved service delivery (Bench-Capon, 2014). Use of artificial intelligence has reduced the costs previously incurred in treating the patients and it has also improved patients outcomes. Currently, most health care centers are using machine leaning which has improved diagnosis compared to when it was being done by humans. One of the artificial intelligence being used in the healthcare sector is IBM Watson which has the ability to understand natural language as well as to respond to questions asked. The system helps to ask patients questions which it uses to diagnose the illness which the patient is suffering from (Barrat, 2015). The other artificial intelligent system used in the health sector is chatbots which assists the patients to make payments, provide virtual health assistance and follow up on appointments as well as giving medical feedback. The artificial intelligence systems have revolutionized the health sector in a great way (Cohen, & Feigenbaum, 2014). Today, artificial intelligence is helping to drive advances in health care diagnostics, and could be used to improve patient safety, reduce drug costs, and avoid product and drug recalls. Xavier University has launched the Xavier Center for Artificial Intelligence to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence to improve healthcare (Heyne, 2017).

Business

Business sector is another area where artificial intelligence is being applied in a great way. Artificial intelligence is being used to carry out repetitive processes. There are various types of robots which are installed in the manufacturing process to carry out the repetitive tasks instead of hiring many employees. The industries are integrating algorithms in the CRM platforms and analytics to come up with ways which they can serve the customers in a better way. Chatbots are being used by most business in their websites to provide instant feedback to their customers (Jones, 2015). Currently, there has also risen automation of job positions. For instance, there are various automatic machines such as bank ATM and vendor machines which do not require human supervision. Uber is providing pre-packaged machine learning algorithms 'as-a-service' to its team of mobile app developers, map experts and autonomous driving teams. Walmart uses HANA which is SAP’s cloud platform that companies uses to manage databases of information they have collected (Ruth, 2017).

Education

Education is another sector where artificial intelligence is being applied. Artificial intelligence is being used to automate the grading system enabling the tutors to get more time to tech the students. There are also artificial intelligence tutors who provide support to the students ensuring that the students get more support in their studies (Cohen, & Feigenbaum, 2014). Full adoption of the artificial intelligence will change how students learn and this will help the teachers to provide better education services. For example smart content for digitally guided text books. An intelligent tutoring system supports the effectiveness of individualized tutoring and instruction in the classroom. The University of Southern California (USC) Institute for Creative Technologies is a pioneer in creating smart virtual environments and applications that draw on AI, 3-D gaming, and computer animation to develop authentic virtual characters and realistic social interactions (Faggella, “Techmergence” 2017).

Finance

Artificial intelligence is also being applied in the finance sector. Systems such as Turbo tax and Mint are improving the financial institutions (Jones, 2015). These applications collect personal data and give financial advice to people. Currently there are various software have been used for trading on Wall Street and to carry out other financial activities. Banks are using AI to fight frauds. Artificial intelligence has impacted positively on the financial industry. A robo-advisor is an artificial intelligence virtual financial advisor. They provide automated financial planning services with little to no human supervision. Today, Betterment LLC is one the top robo-advisor companies.

Law

Artificial intelligence has also been applied widely in the law industry (Cohen, & Feigenbaum, 2014). There systems which have been applied to sort out documents which was tedious for people when artificial intelligence was not being used. Most of the processes in the law industry have been automated making it easier to get evidence and solve cases. A robot will not be replacing a lawyer at least not anytime soon (Lohr “Nytimes”, 2017). An artificial intelligence technique called natural language processing has proved useful in scanning and predicting what documents will be relevant to a case. Other lawyer tasks like advising clients, writing legal briefs, negotiating, and appearing in court, is beyond the reach of computerization right now.

Manufacturing

The manufacturing industry is another sector where artificial intelligence has been applied. In most factories, robots are being used to carry out most of the tasks. The robots are being use to carry out tasks which are hard for humans such as lifting heavy loads. The machines have also helped speed up production ensuring that there are no shortages. Artificial intelligence enables machines to be programmed in a way that they can act similar to humans. Because of using artificial intelligence, products have been standardized, factories are producing high quality goods and at cheaper prices (Jones, 2015). Companies are able to know when the law inputs are running low and make the necessary purchases to avoid shortages. Although many artificial intelligence-driven production lines will still need human support and supervision, we are headed towards a largely robotic manufacturing industry.

Timeline History of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has been developed over years since the fourth century. However, after the invention of computers, people could now make more sophisticated programs which can perform more sophisticated task and make better decisions than human
