of thought, with the translation of notions into words being
the act of understanding" (Atkinson). Sometimes to increase the understanding of words, the
speaker must either increase the amount or substance of the words or greatly shorten the words to
get the actual point across to the receiver. A simple computer program can distinguish and
differentiate the spoken words to understand what the speaker is talking about. Many programs
can now teach interactive language classes, these classes can understand the spoken words well
enough to correct the speakers tones and accents.
Strong AI is the building of machines that have the intellect equal to humans or better
than humans so that the intellectual ability cannot be ascertained from that of a genuine human.
Promises of the technology
There have been many books and movies based upon Artificial intelligence, we as a
culture have been inundated with images of a future filled with intelligent robotic assistants who
are able to perform all of our menial, redundant, dangerous and everything else we don’t want to
do every day. According to USA Today, robots are working side by side with human workers at
the Haneda airport in Japan. This is only a start in the integration of
robotic use into our daily lives, in the near future we may be
outsourced to robotic workers, and simply drawing a pension
from big businesses that own the companies the robots are working at
(Fox News).
Usually robots are portrayed as the so called villain in movies,
typically there is an underlying human villain that has programmed them to act in a certain way
that is not consistent with their original programming. When a robot is functioning properly
however, they could (theoretically) be a very valuable asset for freeing us up from the mundane
tasks or problems that are not worthy of wasting a lot of time on, then we can focus on problems
that are too technical or too far advanced for their reasoning mainframe to handle. But what
happens when someone does hack into your personal robot to either steal information about you
or to program it to cause your family harm, for every good idea there is also someone who hacks
the system just for fun. New cars get hacked and are causing crashes and systems to be disabled,
these are simple systems and people are still breaking into them, why, people get bored and find
something that hasn’t been broken into yet. So, to make a name for themselves they hack systems
for bragging rights mainly, there are some however that have with malicious intent.
Personal and societal impacts of technology
The future of robots is just around the corner for us and our children, like it or not we are
going to be the leaders in robotic personal usage since the prices are currently dropping to an
acceptable level. In the not too far future they will be as plentiful as smart phones are now or
answering machines were 20 years ago. Robotic Intelligence is only a matter of time for the near
future.
Workplace and peer impacts of the technology
We must accept the influx of intelligent beings whether they are physically working or
just a voice on the telephone. We have already begun the process of phasing human workers out
of supermarkets, banks, customer services, vacuuming and numerous other services. There are
autonomous robots that can move around congested and bustling areas without any problems.
With acceptance, we can start to learn how to control and eventually, how to live side-by-side
with them. Working together will make our lives easier, safer, and increase our own quality of
living.
Potential downsides of the technology
They will have many defects and bugs to work out and many people will lose their jobs
without specialized training, but the advantages will far outweigh the problems of use, like it or
not, here they come.
Efficiency promoted by technology
The Possibilities are endless with the technological advancements and human curiosities.
The near future could hold a cybernetic organism in every home, doing all of our simple,
mundane and dangerous work. This would allow more time for intellectual endeavors for the
future wellbeing of mankind.
Future of the technology
Many advancements in the robotics field have already lead to better mobility for people
with weakened muscles, physical disabilities and injuries. The near future holds many
possibilities for prosthetics research as well as cybernetic organisms, that we can download our
thoughts, memories and personalities into. Work is underway on developing a computer program
that we can download our consciousness into, this research could possibly be the gateway to
being immortal
