The counter opinion would be that monitoring online activity is an invasion of privacy, especially without notice. They have more merit with this stance if the Superintendent maintains not giving notice. However, I feel that if I help him write the waiver and help layout the plan to obtain the signatures, this would eliminate most of the noise of people complaining about invasion of privacy. I feel that I am a moral person and that I exhibit good ethics. I don’t cheat on my homework. I don’t download movies or music illegally. I have a small circle of friends who I stay loyal to. With that said, I would write the program with or without the waiver, as ethically I feel that employers have the right to see what is being done on their networks and their devices and school districts have the same right to see what students are doing while on the school’s network or the school’s devices.

As our society becomes more dependent on our online access and our technology, our schools will also become more dependent on the ability of the students to access technology and online networks. With the use of e-books, e-learning, and online testing, all students have to have constant access to networks in order to do their assignments. It is inevitable that all school districts, will one day have tablets or devices of some sort for every student. With this the school district has a responsibility to balance the students’ private medical and grade information, with the safety and security of monitored networks.

The program that I would write in this situation would include limited access, by username and password. This would ensure that only the Superintendent and anyone he set up as an admin would be able to access the online information. I would also, set up access by username. This username access would ensure that if someone who shouldn’t have admin access to the student’s information, the student’s medical and grade information are still held private.
