Nathaniel Hawthrone was born in 1804 in our setting of the story, Salem, Massachusetts this explains the understanding of the town’s dark history. When it mentions Goody Cloyse and Martha Carrier those were actual women that were killed in Salem for being “witches” which followed by King Philip’s war. This is also where Hawthrone’s father set fire to the Indian village making him change his name from Harthrone to Hawthrone due to his father never repent for his actions, though another factor was that his great- grandfather was a judge in the witchcraft trials (Terri Whitney). Hinting the town’s awful history shows Goodman Brown’s interest in the devil leading him to go on a pursuit. Their ideals and beliefs as a society may project itself as being holy and right, but in the end, it turns out evil and rotten, as Goodman and Hawthrone later discovers. Once he realized the reality of things, Goodman Brown then withdraw from his community dying a sad death which gave us an inside on Hawthrone own life since he spend one third of his life in isolation due to similar reasoning ( Jacqueline Shoemaker, Florida Gulf Coast University).
