It has been shown that small areas with low socioeconomic status have a significant rise in certain types of crimes. In areas with low funding the probability of minimal policing is high; without the resources to investigate and prosecute criminals and their activities crime has been shown to increase. Without adequate resourcing there is less of a risk of criminals being caught, and thus there will little to deter people from committing crime. In small towns, there are normally not much to do and any activities are too far away to travel to, so youth will turn to other ways of entertainment. Usually this means substance and alcohol abuse which can lead to violence and criminal activity.

In order for society to function in a civilised manor, numerous laws are put into place to deter people from committing various types of crimes. The laws are wide-ranging and the consequences of breaking the laws differ in severity depending on the type of law broken.

In conclusion, there has always been criminal activity in society; due to a person’s upbringing, their own human nature and their innate want to defy the social norms are the reasons behind law breaking. The consequences of crime such as: fines, community service and jail time all deter people from wanting to commit crime but has not proven to be a way of limiting this activity. Society also needs to educate people of the punishment and help those who are in danger of exposing themselves to committing crime. There needs to be a more robust system put into place to influence people not to commit crimes in the first place.
