The volunteer aide and center director could have handled it a different way also. The volunteer aide shouldn’t have sad anything to the center director because that wasn’t their place to tell them that. The only person the volunteer aide should have contacted about the was the case manager. Even if the volunteer aide did slip up and pass a comment by the center director they should have not took it as far as cutting off of the meals immediately. They didn’t know the reason behind the gun or anything. Also, obviously the person needed help to where as they needed food delivery to their house.
Herman could have been more willingly with his case manager. She gave him the opportunity to hide the gun and not just throw it out completely. He made the choice to be stubborn and stuck in his ways about the way he felt on his safety. He didn’t even want to go down to the center to pick up the food himself without anyone coming to his home to find out about the gun anymore.
Supervision is the action of supervising someone or something. Consultation is the action or process of formally discussing or a meeting to seek advice, according to Webster (2015). Code 3.01: Supervision and Consultation was violated by the case manager because they were supposed to be there to supervise what went on between Herman and the volunteer aide. She was supposed to make sure that only the necessary things were being discussed between the two. Supervision could have helped in this situation because if someone was there while the meals were being delivered maybe once or twice throughout the week Herman and volunteer maybe wouldn’t have discussed about him having a gun. Consultation could have helped the situation because the case manager could have given Herman advice on not to tell the volunteer aide about his gun if wanted to keep receiving meals from the senior center. In order for them to do that they would have had to been present.
Social workers may come to a problem where they have to break the code of ethics at times and this was one of the times. But, most of time there is a better way to handle things rather than just letting everything fall apart and leading up to you client harming themselves or another person. The system can just as easily criticize as it can relieve.
