somehow inferior in terms of knowledge or can be tricked into thinking a higher price is a fair price is backward. Since Lance better understands the culture and doesn’t hold stereotypes about it, he is more fit to be deciding things like pricing strategies. Therefore, I do not think Mr. John’s decision to send him back to the HQ for a whole month is the right decision since it harms both Mr. John and Mr. Lance.
Mr Lance would have to leave his family for a whole month and yet again deal with change and assimilate (which he will, with flying colors again). Further, since he has been talked down by John and John’s preconceived notions about Lance have been made clear in the HQ, everyone there also may hold similar opinions. These similar opinions may drive similar conclusions for everyone in the America office since the Americans will have little or no understanding of where Lance is coming from, especially without a crowd of Dutch people to back him up.
Mr John would suffer because unknowingly, he will be sending away the closest thing he has to home in a foreign land. Irrespective of the fact that Mr. Lance has lived in the Netherlands for a long time, he has an American upbringing and understands Mr. John’s mannerisms. Mr. John could learn how to assimilate from Mr. Lance and so it is not the right decision to send Mr. Lance away.
conclusion and suggestion:
In conclusion, Mr. John and Mr. Lance could’ve resolved this by being more respectful of each other’s cultures and accepting each other’s differences. Respect is a two way street and both parties did not work very hard to earn it. In their own eyes, they were both right and should have worked together to become more understanding of the other person’s perspective.
The main suggestion to Mr. John would be to keep an open mind, be accepting of change and trying to let go of preconceived notions. Mr. John also needed to understand that instead of leading by exercising authority and being offended every time things did not pan out the way he wanted them to, he should’ve taken the help of those around him and lead by establishing trust for himself amongst his employees. The only way to truly assimilate is to forget the differences and focus on the similarities between the two cultures.
