The sexualizations of our culture and its effects on myself personally have become dramatically clearer to me. The biggest effect being that ads have diminished emotional intimacy and it has become less valuable than sexual intimacy. I believe I have fallen into the trap set by advertisers and have been drawn to products that have promoted pretty clothes, jewelry, shoes, purses and even some of my favourite foods. I find that these have affected my self worth by making me feel guilty of how easily and unconsciously I was attracted to pretty, good quality products that I have in the past desired and admittedly have purchased. I believe that other women as well as men have been pulled into the trap to purchase products simply because of how they are presented to us in all avenues of media these days. I am going to make an effort to be more selective and aware of the issues surrounding the sexualization and objectification of women in Advertisements. The only way to see change going forward is to change attitudes, educate people and children as well as what we considered the 'norm'.
