Also, when basing conclusions on our own observation or experience, the conclusions must be qualified and reasonable. We can’t make absolute claims, but we can enlighten and inform readers by presenting our experiences and observations in vivid detail, analyzing the experiences, and explaining how the experiences led us to form the conclusions we’ve formed.

When basing your conclusions on sources, you should not assume your readers know anything about the source you’re referencing. Statements like “I agree with David McCullough’s argument that millennials aren’t special” show that you haven’t thought carefully about a larger context for your essay. You are imagining a professor (me) as your only reader. Instead, imagine a general audience of educated readers and introduce your sources appropriately.

When you begin drafting, present your claim clearly, near the beginning of the paper. Use one of the opening strategies described in Chapter 4 of Little, Brown or in TSIS or create your own good strategy for engaging readers and presenting your thesis. In the body paragraphs, help readers appreciate your thesis by presenting a great deal of specific, well-chosen evidence from the sources we’ve read as well as specific details and descriptions from your own experiences. For your conclusion, restate your thesis with a fresh emphasis and use one of the concluding strategies discussed in Chapter 4 of Little, Brown. Like the opening paragraph, the conclusion can be shorter than the body paragraphs. Use the templates provided in TSIS to incorporate information from sources, to address naysayers, to help readers understand why your position matters, and to tie the argument together.

Remember to save your essay as a Word document and to name it your last nameE3. Use MLA format, including the MLA heading.

*Unless you get permission from me, you are to use only the assigned texts for your sources, no additional sources.
