TREATMENT OF THE WATERS OF XOCHIMILCO.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Cleaning of the lake of Xochimilco.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:

• Lake Xochimilco: The water of the lake of Xochimilco was a fresh water, but that did not mean that it was potable because in the lake many aquatic plant species grew that gave it bad taste and worse color. The main use of the water of the lake of Xochimilco was agricultural. In the Mesoamerican preclassic era, this lake was the largest supplier of vegetables, due to its farmland. In this lake began to develop the culture system known as chinampa. In order to stimulate the tourist character of Xochimilco, plant species (such as aquatic lily) and animals (such as carp) were introduced, which seriously threatened the survival of native species such as ajolote and tulle.

• Body of water: It is fed with treated waters of the hill of the star, and the alluvial plain of Churubusco, the lake of CHALCO.

• Pollution of the lake: This is not the first time researchers and experts in lake areas have pointed out that the Xochimilco canals are in a critical situation. Water quality has been lost due to poor management of solid waste, use of pesticides, invasion of protected areas and desiccation of canals. Daily the channel system of Xochimilco receives 1 374 discharges of black and gray water from 917 farms. This contamination has caused that the people stop to produce in the chinampas if not in greenhouses which increases the number of chemicals inverted in the water

• Bioarena: Home water treatment system designed as an improvement of traditional slow sand filtration filters, this filter removes pathogens and suspended solids from water reserves, reduces the bad taste, smell and discoloration of the water.

• Molecular sieve: Material that contains small pores of a precise and uniform size that is used as an absorbing agent for gases and liquids. Molecules that are small enough to pass through the pores are absorbed, while the larger ones are not.

• Activated charcoal: It is porous charcoal that traps compounds, mainly organic in gas or liquid. Use: water purification, deodorization and purification of the air, water discoloration.

• Rusty nails: They are suitable for adaptation to the sand filter that removes arsenic from the water.

• Project Pros:

Make a profit to all this sow water

Help the environment by removing some of the pollutants that rise to the atmosphere.

2. Species less damaged.

• Cons of the project:

1. Permits we should ask to extract water from this lake.

2. Late earnings.

3. Our pipes can be broken.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

• 1m3 = 1000 liters

• 1 inch = 2.54 cm

• There are pipes of different quantities of water: 5000, 10000, 15000 and 20000 liters.

• Fees for some 5,000 l pipe companies in some colonies: Ecatepec: $ 800 Aragon and Coacalco Zone: $ 900 GAM: $ 950

PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY:

To clean 5,000 liters of water from the lake of Xochimilco.

HYPOTHESIS:

If it is known that the water can be treated for cleaning then we can carry out our project for use of irrigation and car wash.

WORKPLAN:

We intend to reach our goal by testing a fish tank which will contain different types of waste without adding any species, bearing in mind that these could be damaged.

MATERIAL: UNITS: COSTS:

1. Arena (Bioarena) 5 kg $104.75

2. Activated carbón
