The only thing I see is that everyone screams, everyone raises their hand, everyone screams without listening to what they’re saying, everyone is on their feet without knowing that their feet are tied together, everyone has their eyes opened without realizing they’re actually closed, everyone hears, not nobody listens, everyone talks, but nobody speaks, everyone thinks they’re right without actually knowing what they’re doing, everyone thinks they’re here supporting me, but no one realizes that who they’re forgetting, is me…
My name is Tania Romero and I bet you’re probably confused as to what I’m going to be talking about, so I’ll just start off with a simple question so you can get an idea.
What´s the true meaning of being Mexican? Easy, yet difficult to answer. We all assume that just because we were born here it automatically makes us Mexicans, but the pride that were supposed to have of being Mexican is made, you are not born with it. We can say a million words, listen to two million things, see three million things but in the end the question is quite simple. When and how much do you really care about your country?

Being Mexican is much more than three colors and an eagle devouring a snake, being Mexican means being a fighter, because if we go way back we can easily see that we have undertaken battles against repression, discrimination, abuse, injustice, etc. Putting aside the topics we already know and that we frequently listen to on a daily basis, we should recognize all the good things about our country. Let’s recognize all those Mexicans who, even if their going through hard times, still seem to have a smile on their face. Let us recognize all the beauty that Mexico has, all those places that are not tourist attractions, but can still easily take our breath away, Let us recognize our country as a country that knows how to get through hard times.
We as Mexicans have stomped all over our country, we have stopped believing in it, were ashamed of it, we have forgotten about it, we prefer not to talk about it for the shame it brings us, and there are times when we prefer not to say we are from here to avoid people making fun of us. We have abandoned a country that gave us a place to live, we have given up on a country that gave us friends, family, and a home. We have thrown it in the attic and we have left it all alone, not just you, but a large amount of Mexicans. We have built a Wall of criticism, a Wall of deception, a Wall that does not let us see Mexico, the country that will always be here for you, but that you’re only there for it when you want something from it.
