be moral because it best serves my interest. To be moral is my best interest because it is not just to benefit me from the moral rules that I follow but to avail the possibility of having rewards and also to avoid certain punishments that occur. Although being moral has the sense of responsibility to serve other’s interest, we should also take for account our own welfare. Since Kavka’s reconciliation project is always an outcome-based, it judges actions on the basis of consequences and results not in terms of motives. Thus, no matter what my interest would be, as long as the possible outcome is good, then it is acceptable.
I should be moral because it provides harmonious relationship with others. Since we cannot afford the cost of being immoral because aside from having a guilt feeling and remorse about what has been done, there are also external sanctions that will awaits us in the long run, we chose to me moral for having benefits that is best suited not only for ourselves but also for others. Moreover, we tend to give up our rights and assume obligations in order to achieve peaceful relationship with others. We must also respect the rights of others for it could be the best for both parties in the long run.
So when someone would ask me why should I be moral? It is because it is prudent. And that I should be moral because it best serves my interest and it provides harmonious relationship with others.
So, if morality is based on self-interest, it should be supported by a society that is stiff in providing necessary punishments. Thus, if an actual social environment is punitive, the Reconciliation Project seems to have succeeded with respect to it (Kavka, 1984, p.6).
