Machiavelli states, “I conclude, therefore, with regard to being feared and loved, that men love at their own free will, but fear and the will of the prince, and that of a wise prince must rely on what is in his power and not on what is power of others, and he must only contrive to avoid incurring hatred, as has been explained.” (494). Machiavelli argues effectiveness moral versus immoral behavior when ruling. Morals could cloud or prevent what needs to be done for the betterment of the state. If everyone in a society acted on the same set of morals. Morals there would
be no discord. That is not true or realistic expectation in the real world. The prince should not forget his morals but instead use his morals to be a successful leader and also know when not to be over merciful or lenient when dealing with immoral behavior. A prince who perceived as moral will have a greater authority of the state. Moral or immoral? Dealing with the statue of the state morals does play a big portion of the respect and guidance shown to the state and countrymen. Apply morals as much as you can and use the best judgment when dealing with adversities. Sometimes it may seem to be immoral, but you need to do what is best for the state. The end justifies the means.
