6. In your opinion, is the child at the same level in this domain of (physical) development as other children their age or at a different level? Explain fully (3 pts) In my opinion, the child is definitely at the same domain of physical development as other children in his age group. He was capable of performing locomtor movements such as walking, jumping, running, etc. He was able to perform gross motor movements, such as throwing, catching, kicking, through which the body gives or receives force from objects. Joshua showed increasing levels of proficiency, control, and balance in walking, climbing, running, jumping, hopping, and skipping. Joshua also demonstrated increasing abilities to coordinate movements in throwing, catching, kicking, bouncing balls, and using the slide and swing

7. What three questions about this child’s PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT were left in your mind as you conclude this observation and explain why this question is relevant to what you observed in the child? (3 pts)

1) “At what age will this child learn how to run properly?” As I mentioned before, Joshua was quite a runner. He enjoyed the feeling of being the fastest and did everything in his power to increase his speed during playing sessions. However, he ran without bending his knees backwards as most experienced runners do to maximize their speed. Instead, he was a rather sloppy runner, which was evident from the way he stepped heavily on the floor instead of having a quick, light step. Also his arms weren’t rested at his sides calmly or even bended ahead of him to give him more balance. They were sort of all over the place as they moved around ahead of him as he ran.

2) “Why should children be supervised constantly as they go through stages of physical development?” I noticed during my day at the preschool that either the teacher or the teacher’s assistant would run around and follow the little children as they played, whether it was indoors or outdoors. I think adults should give kids their space by not hovering around them too often or constraining their ability to move however they please. However, it’s definitely imperative that adults stay nearby kids as they learn to excel in activities that could possibly harm them. Several times, the teacher had to tell Joshua or other children to slow down, be careful, not touch this, not jump over that… These things as well as keeping somewhat of a physical contact by helping children climb, handing them dangerous materials, watching them stand on top of heights, etc. are important to ensure their safety, seeing as they are not yet experienced and well acquainted with their bodies.

3) “When will Joshua learn how to feed himself using the proper spoon/fork holding grasp?” I noticed that when Joshua was eating his cereal, he was struggling to hold the spoon in place and even spilled the milk over him a couple of times. He wasn’t able to aim the spoon in his mouth easily, because of the way he was holding it. Instead of putting his thumb on the top of the spoon and his index finger on the bottom, he used somewhat of a Palmer grasp to control the spoon. Also, he’d grab onto the spoon near the very top, rather than more towards the center of it.
