In the next incident, when Ophelia tries to set up a plan on Hamlet by obeying her father just to confirm that if Hamlet was really crazy and that Ophelia was the reason behind his insanity, that is where she loses all her respect and love from Hamlet's life. He cannot handle lies. None of us. Relationships are built with love and trust. And Hamlet believes this very strongly. The girl whom he loved the most, lied to him and betrayed him. Betrayal need not just be cheating on our loved one for someone else but it can also be lies. Hamlet was not in a situation to handle this. He spoke really bad about her and her character. He asked Ophelia to go to the nunnery. This could actually give us two meanings, one that she should be a virgin forever or the other one that gives us a direct meaning that she is no better than a whore. His harsh words hurt Ophelia very badly and she has left heartbroken. But she never realized that these would have never happened if she hadn't planned a trick on Hamlet by obeying her father. Hamlet left her saying that, there shall be no more marriages. On looking at this behaviour of Hamlet, even Ophelia believes that he is insane.
Even after all these, in another act we find Hamlet choosing Ophelia over his mother, Gertrude. But during their conversations, he really talks very bad about her character and her sexuality. Hamlet accuses her of faithlessness, of whoring. Ophelia still tries to be calm. After all these incidents, Hamlet kills Polonius. Ophelia is left alone without her father. She couldn't handle the truth that her father was killed by none other than her lover. She feels like she has lost everything in her life and she doesn't have anybody for her. She also lost the love of her life, Hamlet by obeying her father and brother. She realized that she had betrayed Hamlet's love for her, even though she was the one who loved him more. Just like Hamlet, even Ophelia goes mad after her father's death. Her entire life was passed by just the ruling men. Hamlet could have tried to understand her situation. The fact that she obeyed her father was quite understandable, because the women during those days had to obey the orders by Men and that had become a part of everyone's life then. But, even Hamlet didn't try to understand her. She had no body in her life who could bring her out of this darkness. She kept singing sad songs. She was very depressed that she decided to end her life. She did. She drowned herself in the nearby river and gave up her life forever.
Ophelia became a girl who lived in a male dominated world and someone who didn't had the rights to express her feelings. She had betrayed her love by obeying her father and brother, she had probably engaged even in sexual act with her lover Hamlet which she realized now that she wasn't pure. According to Polonius and Laertes, a girl's purity and of her being a virgin before her marriage is the most important thing. And lastly, she had even lost her father. Being helpless, she had to kill herself. It's just not only Ophelia who lost her life but also Hamlet. As the saying goes "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves", the same thing happened with Hamlet. He lived his life just with the main intention of taking revenge on his uncle and step father, Claudius for murdering his father and marrying his widowed mother. During the process of killing Claudius, Hamlet also died but with the satisfaction that he could bring justice for his father's death and that He could rest in peace here after.
