on the hillside, Little boxes all the same”(Little Boxes). These lines are reiterated multiple times throughout the song’s melody, and it resembles how conforming to something forces lifestyles in which are in a continuous loop.
Us, as human beings aren’t manufactured of clay, but when we conform to an idea or way of life, we are being molded into what that group or how a person wants us to be. This is expressed in the song Little Boxes where the writer states, “And the boys go into business, And marry and raise a family”(Little Boxes). These two lines within the context of the song symbolizes how conformists are, because the boys, no matter what, are anticipated to go into business. Then afterwards are expected to marry a woman and raise a family. This is clear evidence that as humans, to conform means to give up who we are, to act and be different than who we want ourselves to be.
Conformation is a contrary discussion, but as humans, we all know our inhibitions. Conforming changes who you are, or who you hope to be, and it molds you into what that conformist group wants you to be. Our genders are important and necessary, but to have set rules, or roles, on what a real man or woman is like is nonessential. Gender roles will continue to negatively impact our society and emotions, because we, as humans, should be able to determine who we are or how we want to act, how we want to live and do things on a daily basis, and what emotions we feel when and why, instead of having conformists groups do such for us.
