The ending of the story never would have happened if it had not been for Krogstad. Because Krogstad blackmailed Nora, she was forced to try to help him keep his job. In doing this she realized that she was not in a healthy marriage. She was continuously treated like property by her husband when he made her do his chores around the house and set up all the Christmas decorations. He orders her around like his personal servant and treats her like a puppet. At the end of the play when Torvald got extremely angry at Nora for borrowing the money to save his own life, Nora realized that she did not deserve that kind of treatment. She abandoned Torvald and her kids because she was sick of being treated like a “doll.” If Krogstad had never blackmailed her, Nora would’ve continued to live her miserable life under the control of Torvald.
Krogstad was clearly the villain of the story. He blackmailed Nora in hopes that he would not lose his job. While talking to Nora he said, “I will tell you. I want to rehabilitate myself, Mrs. Helmer. I want to get on; and in that your husband must help me” (Ibsen). He is telling Nora that he really doesn’t want to blackmail them, he just wants to keep his job and continue moving up in the ranks. Even though Krogstad did an evil act, it ended up helping Nora by freeing her from her husband. Krogstad was evil, but he also helped Nora discover that she needed a new start
