Vanity vs. Substance is an underlying theme for the women of the novel as we see Georgianna, who was not focused on enough in the movie, and Mrs. Reed as idols of vanity. Marrying the wealthy uncle of Jane was a means of sustenance for Mrs. Reed, footsteps which Georgianna followed in by marrying a wealthy man. These women weren’t portrayed in fond lights in Eyre’s book. As for substance, we have women such as Jane and Bessie Lee. Jane being the protagonist & a magnet for female equality in value & thought. Bessie Lee is an example of a person who treats Jane well, who doesn’t need for Jane to be wealthy or beautiful to do so.
I genuinely believe that Jane Eyre’s self-value is not something that only women can look at and learn from, it is something that I believe that we all can learn something about our self-worth. Jane would not settle for something did not truly want, whether it be a loveless marriage with St. John or an illegitimate marriage with Rochester. From her childhood to her complete maturation, Jane’s impeccable perspective of being poor to being wealthy (the fortune she inherited was the equivalent of approximately 2.3 million pounds, which in that time was especially a lot, even if it was split four ways), allowed her to be a strong, ideal woman, fight for what she wanted and keep her head even through times of strife.
