The pathos is also supported by his choice of pronouns. He uses I and we which are 1st person singular and 1st person plural, and that creates a sort of personal bond between Martin Luther King and the receiver of the speech.

Another rhetorical technique he uses a lot is anaphoras, e.g. when he repeats “let freedom ring…” (p. 4 ll. 12-16) or one of the most important ones when he repeats “I have a dream…” (p.3 ll. 14-31).

He is using imagery in his language “Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice” (p.2 ll. 7-8). The adjectives “dark”, “desolate” and “sunlit” appeals to our minds and creates visual ideas in our heads and that makes us connect even more to the speech and the message of it. In the beginning, the people of America was heartbroken and they had lost their faith, but later on more people began to realize that they had to do something and one of the bigger influences was the organization NAACP. All Martin Luther King’s work and his speech “I have a dream” has done a big impression on a lot of people, and still have bearing this day today.

He wanted the same rights for black people as well as for the white people, and that is what we have today at almost all points. There is still racism that affects people all over the world, e.g. the Ferguson unrest, but in less lower degree than back then.
