Self-improvement may come in many different forms. My self-improvement to make myself a better individual comes in the form of goals that I have set for myself. The biggest goal that I have for myself is to improve on my people skills towards individuals that I may not already know. It’s easy to be yourself when you are around friends and family but sometimes I feel as it I close myself off to people. When I walk around campus, I usually have headphones in, making the appearance that I do not want to be bothered when that is not the case. I love meeting and interacting with new people. I also can be indecisive at times when it comes to situations. My goal is to stick with my gut feeling and trust my instinct when I am making choices on a day to day basis. I have always been told that “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.” I am currently working on improving how I say things. Sometimes, if not most times, the things I say can come off very blunt and straightforward, making the things I say sound arrogant or rude.
Now here comes the serious part, a topic that I’ve never spoken to anyone about. This topic is how I truly feel about myself, not what others think of me, not what others may say about me (good or bad), but the honest truth of how I view myself. I have had the opportunity to grow up very fortunate and blessed, and coming from that lifestyle I’ve always hear people say “What do you can to complain about and how could you possibly have anything negative to say about yourself. Truth be told, I always feel like what I’m doing isn’t good enough. This covers every aspect of my life from my weight, to academics, even in my social life. I have family members who hold me to such a high standard that at the end of every single day I feel as if I’m not meeting the standard that they have set for me. At times, I doubt myself because of this and it makes the weaknesses that I do have seem biggest than they actually are.
So the next time you spot this 6’3, average built, handsome, young African American male causally walking through campus or at a campus event you will know that he is more than what meets the eye. You will know Zach, and the type of person that he truly is.
