34. Dostoyevsky is trying to show social views and ideas popping up in Russia during the 1860’s. Dostoyevsky’s tone toward him is more patience before foolishness. Through Leb.’s character Dosoyevsky expresses his disgust for such ideas. Leb.’s ideas and views show how things were like during the 1800’s in Russia.

35. Raskolnikov connects the two scenarios because they are somewhat similar. They are both young, innocent (for the most part) girls that got caught up in his schemes. After Raskolnikov confesses, he starts to doubt the reason for his murder. Even though he questions his motives, he does not feel any shame for the actual murder. He killed himself because committing this murder has effectively cut him off from society and humanity.

36. Raskolnikov’s dream and Katerina’s death is similar. While Katerina did not get physically beaten by people like the mare did, she was ignored and ridiculed instead. Much like the horse, she really had no one to save her.

38. Svid. lures Dunya with talk about his brother, Raskolnikov. Even though he threatens to, Svid. does not want to rape Dunya; instead he wants to seduce her. Dunya does not kill him because she is not capable to take a life. Svid. does not rape her because he realizes Dunya will never love him once she shoots him.

5. Raskolnikov deeply cares for his mother and sister. He does not want Dunya marrying Luzhin and sacrifice herself for his sake for example. Even though Raskolnikov cares for them, he does not want to stay close to them. He does not see family in the same light as his mother and sister do. He believes they should only see each other in times of need.
