Other than this, Amy Chua is also doing a great job at convincing and persuading the reader by anticipating potential counterarguments. ““I’m using the term “Chinese mother” loosely.”, “I’m also using the term “Western parents” loosely.”
Amy Chua is well aware of the fact that she is generalizing Chinese and Western parents and by anticipating potential counterarguments she makes the reader less alert and more prone to agree with her arguments.
Amy Chua also manages to implement at sense of humour throughout the text.
“If a Chinese child gets a B - which would never happen - there would first be a hair-tearing explosion.”
By doing this she releases the tension in the text so her arguments does not become to overwhelming for the reader and at the same time it helps keeping the reader engaged in the text. The essence of humour in the article can also make it easier for the reader to memorize her arguments, which can help inclining the reader to agree with her point of view.
The article is also written in a reader-friendly manner, which can be seen by the formality of the vocabulary, the contractions as well as the structure of the text.
This is also a key-part of Amy Chua’s attempt to keep the reader engaged and again persuading the reader into agreement with her point of view.
What consequences could the adopting of the Chinese parenting methods and values possibly bring? It is very evident in Amy Chua’s article, that as long as you take away your child’s freedom and force it to sit on a chair and practice some music instrument and do extra homework, your child will become successful.
However, this Chinese way of upbringing will not work on everyone and some children will fail and not fulfil their parent’s expectation and that can lead to demotivation and depression and create hatred and ruin the relationship between a child and it’s parents eternally.
The main reason for why I think this punishing way of raising a child might work better in China than in the Western world is because of the cultural difference.
The values in a communistic Chinese society and a liberal Western society are always going to be different and the way of upbringing in a certain society will most likely reflect the society’s ideological conviction.
Most parents have a high authority in Chinese families and their children do not only respect them but they also fear them. Even though most parents also have a certain authority in Western families, most Westerners will always believe that you need a certain degree of freedom to form your own identity, find happiness and become the person you want to be.
It is extremely difficult to determine which way you best possibly raise and protect a child but I believe that what determines how parents choose to raise a child, is just a reflection of the societies ideological belief. China does not only have strict parents but they also have strict teachers, a strict government, strict police officers etc. The very strict Chinese parenting and the more unrestricted Western parenting is not a question about which of the two are best, it is merely a question about the geographical placement and the environment the families are living in.
