Purpose
Growing up I watched a lot of violent things such as: violent movies, TV shows, and even played violent video games it never influenced me. As I got older I saw cases about people actually getting influenced by video games and how it made them do certain crimes they weren’t accounted for. In my opinion, I think those video gamers spend a little more too much time and their mind can’t switch off game mode versus reality. O’Hehir purpose of writing this article is because it’s an issue that he must care about and he wants more people to become more involved towards the issues. Also, it can be O’Hehir probably making a response to another editor’s article giving him his opinion towards it. Another purpose can be towards politics since he brought up Sen. Hillary Clinton. He wants us to know that people do blame their actions on video games since it takes fewer responsibilities on them. O’Hehir opinions on his article can be we need more media awareness in the news and around the world, plus on how it affects our children. He also wants to voice towards the youth culture.
In fact, we need people in our society to be more accountable for their actions. MAN UP! O’Hehir want to awaken his audience to understand that it’s not just media that will contribute to violence being involved in their child’s life. He tries to show and inform his audience that a form of change will come among this time or in other generations. When O’Hehir refers to Huesmann and Eron studies he shows that media violence is harmful. They feel like the problem isn’t media-violence it’s more to that among the youth community. He is motivated towards the amount of anti-gamers would read this type of article for instance “The Jeremiah’s”.
Stance
In the article, O’Hehir has a sarcastic approach throughout the article. His sarcastic approach makes the reader try to understand if he being serious or just interested especially with his tone. A sarcastic stance is when O’Hehir talks about Hillary Clinton “on the latest manifestation of the Media Demon” (O’Hehir 1), she basically referring towards how evil video games, action movies comic books, and etc. She has a point but his type of sarcasm knowing that it’s none of those things that can influence children to become evil.
He feels like Hillary Clinton rather lies towards children and adolescents by feeding them fantasies instead of showing them reality. O’Hehir even breaks down the historical information about media violence. Media violence has been around for more than 20 years and it has been the number one assumption to violent time in today’s history. “Media violence breeds real violence, which leads to ever more imaginative media violence, and so on.” (O’Hehir 7) He saying that the more we continue to believe media violence breed real violence, people are going to think they can imaginative these type of things.
Conclusion
The form of writing (Critical Analysis) is a unique type of writing. It’s a type of essay that doesn’t refer to my opinion it’s all about how other people feel towards the article. I only used this form of writing in English 100 but never knew how to master it but I feel like I master it a little bit more than my first time. I learned to separate my thoughts by understanding how to do context, audience, purpose and stance and gathering them in order instead of my thoughts jumping around. It taught me how to be more organize in my writing. I even learned how to analysis the article by annotating and writing my thoughts in the margin to get a better understanding of the article. Since O’Hehir had an advance vocabulary it made the text a bit more challenging to frequently understand it. This essay gave me a better way of writing expanding my vocabulary instead of saying “you” all the time. I may apply this form of writing when I’m doing other critical analysis and may help me improve more in my writing.
