Finding accommodation is other difficulties that many lower class people have trouble with. From Barbara’ reading, she works at Merry Maid during the week for $6.65 an hour, on the weekends she works at the residential facility for only $7 an hour. With low salary like this, she was fail to find anything cheaper with legal living conditions. Later, she rent an apartment at the Blue Haven Motel on Rout 1 for $120 per week because she had no other choice. She wrote: “I’m heading back to Portland in defeat when I notice that the Blue Haven Motel on route 1 has apartments to rent, and the place looks so cute, that I stop. For $120 per week I can have a bed/living area with a kitchen growing off of it, linens included, and a TV that will have cable until the cable company notices that the former occupant is no longer paying the bill. Better yet, the security deposit is only $100, which I produce on the spot.” However, the distance between her place and her jobs was so far, and it was really tough for her to find a place near her jobs with cheap price.

Conclusion, through Barbara Ehrenreich’s experience, she emphasizes that low-wage workers have such a difficult life. Just a few of them feel fine with low salary, others are tried their best to improve their living, to help their family through days. Those workers overcame so many trouble when having minimum wage like treated unkindly by the manager, no accommodation, no healthy foods, lack of money by endless effort. They had to ask help from friends, family, welfare, government; rely on some freebies, small and free lunch, having multiple jobs, even sacrificed their freedom just for keep them alive, move on through those miserable days.
