Once you know the palette you are using, think about the number of floors in your home. Do you have one floor? Two? If you have a two-floored house, consider doing the two floors separately. Splitting the floors into two might make the process a little more doable. Take the process one step at a time and look at how the spaces that connect the floors.
Look at connecting spaces. These are places like hallways stairwells, and entryways. They connect one room (or floor) to another. For these parts of your home, it is good to stick with neutrals like grey, white and beige. These colors are helpful in transitioning from room to room and from floor to floor. However, if the rooms in the home are colored with neutrals, experimenting with darker hues of paint will be a possibility. Adding the darker hue when you have neutrals in the rooms will add depth and warmth. The color change doesn’t have to be drastic - just a shade or two darker will give a change in appearance.
Once you have the colors picked out, test your palette. Get a piece of paper and put the colors next to one another. Look to see what colors match and which ones look out of place. Use sample pots of paint, not sample cards. According to DIY Network, “Sample cards, even at a large size, can be untruthful to color. Using paint will help you assess the colors and see the tones in the light,” (DIY Network 2015.) Also, painting them out will help you see how the colors transition and which shades complement one another.
Painting your home may seem like a hard task. The process of choosing the colors may seem quite scary. However, if you follow the few steps given above, it will go by in a nick of time. First, you should look at the layout of your home and assess the placement and coloring of your appliances and furniture. Then, look at your lighting and see where your light sources are placed. Those will help you determine the placement of your colors. After that, start building your palette. Start with the color for the biggest room and then choose colors depending on the type of feel you want. Next, look at your connecting spaces and the number of floors you have. This will help you determine your transitioning and color scheming between floors. Last of all, test out your palette. Make sure the colors complement one another and that they transition properly. Now, be creative and palette yourself see the scheme of your dreams.
