But as much as I read the story, narrator admitted more about his feeling: "She had magnificent blond hair" (Williams 109). Since falling in love with a little girl will be count as an assault, the doctor tried to express his feeling from another perspective. So he started to show the necessity of an immediate diagnosis for the girl. But as much as Mathilda resist, doctor enjoyed engaging in the battle. This is the common scenario in all abusive relationship, which the offender hurt the weak person and enjoy the pain caused by his torture. This is the only way all sadistic people experiencing love, but they never admit their sadistic behavior and get nervous of those who reminding their ultimate animal instinct. To cover this assumption with more evidence, I can refer to his reaction and anger when the mother told Mathilda "The nice man..." (Williams 110). But the doctor responded: "For the god sake, I broke in. Don’t call me a nice man to her" (Williams 110). It may be an extreme opinion, in fact, I was trying not to see the doctor as a sadistic character. For example, he translated his feeling at the same passage, "I’m here to look at her throat on the chance that she might have diphtheria and possibly die of it. But that’s nothing to her" (Williams 110). But he touched my feeling by describing his sense of shame, and "muscular release" (Williams 111). Then immediately after that admitting his "final unreasoning assault..." (Williams 111). As I said before, Doctor could be very anxious with Mathilda’s reaction, but no excuse authorize such a behavior or feeling, and nothing could justify his sadistic thought.
In short, the story "The Use of Force," has written in a way which reader may consider variety of theme behind the struggle between doctor and Mathilda. The doctor presented contradictory act and thought in the whole story. He also explains his thought behind all of his actions and then made several justifications to urge readers to believe him as a responsible doctor. But since the story had narrated from the first person perspective which is the doctor himself, the reader can put the evidence together and judge the doctor’s feeling. In overall he presented his sadistic personality more than a responsible doctor. Besides all of the doctor’s excuses and confusions, he didn’t justify himself for the use of force even in such an emergency situation.
