separation with herself and the ugly red sweater by being “far away like a runaway balloon”. The incident affects Rachel very powerfully. When Rachel starts showing her true emotions when things go wrong, ultimately she will become calmer and she does just that. She lacks confidence in the incident with her teacher, but still tries to protest. Rachel’s confidence is nowhere she would like it to be and has left her feeling helpless. Well Rachel definitely feels this way and can’t seem to communicate how she feels with her teacher. Clearly, being wrongly accused and treated unfairly is frightening. On the other hand, it can cause children to feel insecure and restrained.

In this day and time power from an adult over a child can affect them severely, so the teachers need to become more aware of how they are addressing the situation or incident that has happened. Therefore, this event makes me wonder if Rachel was somewhat bullied by her teacher. There are teachers out there that do this everyday and do not realize it. They have such power over the children, which tears them down. Rachel manages to make light of the circumstance which I respect. Rachel struggles with the fact that life is unfair and makes her wish she were not a child.

However, her parents did not share the truth about getting older and the feelings of a child at this age. Rachel says feeling your age ‘takes a few days” her thoughts of knowing that being older does not happen all at once. Birthdays are usually supposed to be happy days that people look forward to. Her birthday is ruined by her unkind teacher. I believe awareness is the key here and children need to feel safe in school. In the meantime, they are there to learn and not feel humiliated. When it comes down to it, Rachel is not able to defend herself and feels lost about what has happened on her eleventh birthday. Birthdays are meant to be special, you have cake and celebrate with your family and wonderful memories are made.
