Comijs, H.C., van Exel, E., van der Mast, R.C., Paauw, A., Voshaar, R.O., Stek, M.L. (2012). Childhood abuse in late-life depression. Journal of Affective Disorders, 147 (1-3), pp 241–246. doi:10.1016/j.jad.2012.11.010

This journal article is by Hannie C. Comijs, Eric van Exel, Roos C. van der Mast, Anna Paauw, Richard Oude Voshaar, Max L. Stek and the study would be about the relationship of childhood abuse and depression later in life. Many children of the recent years has faced some form of abuse in the early stages of their life and therefore led to a psychological disorder, depression. However this study provides little information of childhood abuse and depression later in life as most studies conducted are based on several ages groups not only childhood abuse. Though the little research that has been done, they were able to state that approximately half of the adult’s population that faces depression has experienced some form of childhood abuse in the early stages of their life. In the biological research, the elevation of inflammation levels causes a down-fall of one’s health which would be associated with depression, this is the cause of childhood abuse. The more a child is abused, the greater the risk of the depression.

Therefore, this study provides strong evidence in supporting the research about childhood abuse being a major effect toward depression among adults of any age group. For a greater understanding about this psychological effect, further study is needed.
