Dr. Odom finishes his book by giving the strategies for resolving ethical dilemmas which have proven to be a crisis in the twenty first century. One of the strategies that a leader must do is consider whether the action is legal. This can be achieved by seeking assistance from trained people in this area to avoid violating the law regardless of the benefits. Another strategy is to consider whether the decision to resolve the ethical dilemma will cause harm to others. By showing concern for the interest of others a leader may avoid making unethical decision. Even though some ethical course may result to others being harmed, the focus here is to minimize harm to others. Another strategy that the author gives in resolving ethical dilemma is a leader should consider how she would feel if her actions were publicized to the entire world. This can help the leader avoid making unethical decision in the fear of being criticized. A leader can seek advice from trusted advisor who will give her unbiased, objective opinion. However, a second opinion may reveal some factors that were no considered. Therefore, leaders should seek second options before ultimately deciding.
Does it pass the Socrates Test? That’s another strategy Dr. Odom gives. Its an ancient test from a Greek philosopher given credit for setting the agenda for the tradition of critical thinking. It states a leader must ensure that the resolution is not reached solely on gut feelings or subjective desires, but the process of getting the right results must be based on reason and objectivity.
Lastly, a leader should consider if the chosen course of action make God or the higher power of her choosing smile? A leader should look to a source beyond that he feels he reflects the characteristics of good and of being ones best self.
