Over the last 5years, FedEx proudly boasts that their shares have increased by 50%. I feel that is a good indication that their balanced scorecard is proving effective.

From my partner's analysis into the balanced scorecard of UPS, it appears that UPS is more internally focused, and less customer service focused than FedEx. This is not necessarily a negative thing, as it still appears to occupy a niche that allows it to be successful in a very competitive market. The learning and growth perspective shows that UPS is interested in employee health and safety, more than training. They seem to be interested in hiring skilled employees that do not require much training, and, from an internal, perspective, we still get similar results to FedEx. UPS is able to retain its employees by focusing on their well being, rather than offering them more training and incentives. This allows employees to feel comfortable and secure in their jobs. The technology that UPS focuses on is slightly more logistical than customer service oriented, like finding ways to ship their packages faster than their competitors. They believe that customers will see that UPS is delivering packages faster and will be a better service provider than the competition. In fact, it seems that UPS is more focused on obtaining business with other business more than FedEx; business customer's are more likely to be critical of the speed at which packages arrive than the general population, as it may be critical to their operations that packages arrive at certain times. Where as FedEx wants to appeal to the general population, UPS is more focused on appealing to the business world; this is what we see in the customer service perspective.

Financially, we see that UPS has had steady annual growth since 2009. So, it does appear to be effective, even though they have clearly taken a different approach than FedEx.
