Columbus’s encounter of North America helped to revolutionize European understanding of global geography by showing them that there was an undiscovered land and a way to get there and back safely. It also showed there was new land to conquer which made all of Europe anxious to seize different territories before anyone else could have the chance.

Spain’s conquest in the New World greatly affected the Spanish influence in Europe by showing that is it possible to conquer new lands, which sparked different European countries try and accomplish the same. These countries include France who sent Diovanni da Verrazano to look for a Northwest Passage on the Atlantic coast and England. Both countries failed at their goals of finding the Northwest passage, but ended up finding other places of interest.

- How did New Spain’s distinctive colonial population shape its economy and society?

The distinctive population of New Spain helped to shape its economy and society because of the diversity of the people. The number of Spaniards to the number of Indians was unsettling. There were masses of Indians with only few Spaniards and very few Spanish women, which led to the Spanish men marrying Native American women. This happening supported the growth of different social classes, that were defined by European origin. These masses of Indians also encouraged growth in the economy because they were used as slaves to work in mines under the Encomienda system. This system lasted until 1549 when a reform called the “repartimiento” started to replace Encomienda. This reform said that the labor of an Native American should be limited to forty-five days per year from each adult male. This reform, however, did not challenge the treatment of the Indians while they were working. The Indians were forced to work in the mines so that New Spain could export silver back to Spain to increase their wealth.
